I have to tell you, the more I think about it, the more I know that Attitude is everything. The key is to nurture your attitude so that it is healthy and helps you envision and create the positive outcomes you need in order to achieve REAL Success. Regular interaction with positive people is one route to maintaining a healthy attitude. So is being in a posture of continual growth. The real secret, though, to a great attitude is ACTION. Taking action and then studying the results so that you can do even better in the next cycle — celebrating what went right and creating tools to address the challenges will give you confidence as you continue the cycle of doing and learning.
But always remember that attitude is a choice. We cannot always choose our circumstances, but we can choose our attitude toward them. When I was in high school, I applied to go to the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA). I had a vision of myself providing great service to our nation in time of extreme need, and I was going to be prepared. My enthusiasm led me to seek out and spend regular time with the West Coast Regional Director of Admissions for USNA, Tom Teshera, and develop a great relationship. I got almost all of the way through the process to be accepted to USNA, but unfortunately, I narrowly missed the cut off for admission. I didn’t see this as a defeat, since you could apply so long as you hadn’t turned 22, so I figured out a way to improve my record so that I could gain admission the next year.
There was an easy way for highly motivated candidates to get to USNA, and numerous hard ways. In my pride and ignorance, I chose one of the latter. However, my enthusiastic attitude unwillingness to quit helped me attract the people I needed to make straight my crooked path. And in the final moment of challenge, when it looked as though I would fail yet again, Tom stood up for me, citing my indomitable attitude as proof that I would be able to succeed at USNA. Tom’s faith in me also gave me strong motivation to keep up my attitude whenever I was frustrated at USNA, showing how Relationships and Attitude are so vital to being a REAL Success.
The foundational principle in John Maxwell’s philosophy of Leadership is that Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. What are you doing to increase your leadership ability? You work by/for yourself, you say, so why do you need to worry about leadership? It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you want to accomplish, it will require you partnering with other people. Even if you are not “in charge” of others, leadership is all about our ability to influence other’s actions. So come out and learn a little bit about how to increase your leadership ability this week at Coffee and Coaching!
About Coffee and Coaching
Coffee and Coaching is an informal affair. Each week, we present a business or personal development topic to help people move forward their businesses. After the talk and Q & A session, a coach does some “laser coaching” where people have the opportunity to share a current challenge they are facing and discover a logical next step to get them moving forward in the right direction. After the coach gets things moving, the group is invited to “Mastermind” with the volunteer to discover additional novel ways to approach the issue. As the meeting begins to wrap up, people will have an opportunity to connect and network.
Coffee and Coaching is brought to you by TIPS: Together Inspiring Personal Success. Meetings are Friday afternoons from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Cosner’s Corner Panera Bread, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. There is no charge for Coffee and Coaching.
