The Practices of Connection

Last week we explored the five principles my good friend John Maxwell wrote about in his book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. These principles are foundational to our ability to create deep, rich, and lasting connections with the people that are important to you. In case you missed them, they are:

  • Connecting Increases Your Influence in Every Situation
  • Connecting Is All About Others
  • Connecting Goes Beyond Words
  • Connecting Always Requires Energy
  • Connecting is More Skill Than Talent

So, how do you put these into action? That would be The 5 Connection Practices. Come find out what they are at this week’s Coffee and Coaching.

If you enjoy the series and would like to dig deeper into “ECFC” why not sign up for the Mastermind group that will tackle this book in July? The ten week program begins on July 23. You will learn about the 5 connecting principles and the 5 connecting practices. Learn how to enrich the connections in your life and turn them into valuable relationships that pay dividends to your business, advocacy, or other personal endeavor.

That’s Coffee AND Coaching

Don’t foget, we also coach people who are facing personal or business challenges. In 5 minutes, I can help you see what your next step needs to be with whatever situation you have. And once we have made that first step, we Mastermind with the group. I am continuously amazed at the genius and generousity of our Coffee and Coaching devotees. It is inspiring and lots of fun! So come with a question or a challenge where you could use a little help and see the true wisdom of the team!

The Principles of Connection

My good friend John Maxwell wrote a wonderful book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect discussing an amazing challenge that many people have: how do we get beyond simply shouting and cajoling people and really get to know like and trust them? This week in Coffee and Coaching, we will discuss the 5 Connecting Principles that are necessary in order to create deep, rich, and lasting connections with the people that are important to you.

Coffee and Coaching Schedule for May 2012

Well, hello everybody! I want to share with you the Coffee and Coaching schedule for the Month of May. We are going to look at the role of connection in great communication and creating lasting relationships.

Calendar

May 4 – No formal meeting due to Chick-fil-A Leadercast

May 11 -: the 5 Principles of Connection

May 18 – the 5 Practices of Connection

May 25 – the Role of Personality in Connection

Format

Coffee and Coaching is an informal affair. Each week, Dwayne Baptist presents a business or personal development topic to help people move forward their businesses. After the talk and Q & A session, Dwayne does some “laser coaching” where people have the opportunity to share a current challenge they are facing and discover a logical next step to get them moving forward in the right direction. After Dwayne gets things moving, the group is invited to “Mastermind” with the volunteer to discover additional novel ways to approach the issue. As the meeting begins to wrap up, people will have an opportunity to connect and network.

Coffee and Coaching: From Networking to Connection

Wasn’t last week a fun time, discussing the last element in our networking series: What to do AFTER the networking event? As we discussed, in everything you do when networking, begin by understanding what and WHY you are doing things. I personally subscribe to the idea that networking is not about getting business, but about creating meaningful connections with others. This happens by getting to know them and offering them genuine acts of service. These can be introductions that enhance their network, articles and/or information that would be valuable for their business, or anything else you want to do to enhance your relationship with others. Will your expected business potential with that person play some role in your decision? Perhaps, but where I suggest you head with your relations is turning them into walking ambassadors for you with their circles of influence.

Of course, you will probably do even more for those who are actual clients and/or active referral sources. That is great. We should always treat people well who are helping us. But always be ready to help people, regardless of what they are likely do be able to do for you. They may become your biggest, most influential referral source. Wouldn’t that be valuable?

Even more fun was helping people with the challenges offered for coaching. It was great helping one member discover she knew what to say to people when meeting them at a networking event. We also had a great time helping another member gain perspective on her role in the marketing/business development side of her business — something new to her.

The Coming Week

This Friday (4/27) will see us kick off our next themed block, focusing on the power of connection. The May schedule for Coffee and Coaching will be out shortly, and it will be chock full of connection-oriented subjects.

A note about The week after next

Yes, the May calendar is coming out, but I wanted you to know that we will NOT be meeting the first Friday in May (May 4, 2012). That is the day of the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Would you like to join 125,000 leaders around the country for a great day of information, inspiration, and leadership? Then you’ll want to check out the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Here in Fredericksburg, the event will be hosted at Fairview at River Place. The conference fee is $85 and includes lunch and snacks. It will be a great time! You can order tickets here. If you know people outside Fredericksburg who would like to join in the adventure, you can refer them to the main Chick-fil-A Leadercast web site.

Coffee and Coaching — Exciting Things Happening!

Wow! Coffee and Coaching is really lots of fun! People are excited about the format, melding professional development, personal insights, coaching, and masterminding.

Oh, and we enjoy some coffee (or your favorite warm or soft beverage).

Last week in review

Last week was lots of fun. We talked about how to stop feeling awkward when networking. The secret? A couple of things:

  • Know why you are going to the networking event. Knowing why you are there will help you accomplish your goals.
  • Plan your time there. Whether you are going to meet someone in particular, or just to meet somebody new, plan questions you can ask so that you don’t have to think about them while you are talking. You can then listen!
  • Go with the idea that you are going to meet people and make friends. If you do that, you’ll have plenty of time to do business. So relax and enjoy the time!

The coming week

We are devoting the month of April to effective networking concepts. So, in that spirit, our topic this Friday is: Helping Others Feel Good While Networking.

As usual, we will be at the Panera Bread in Cosner’s Corner, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. Friday afternoon, 3-5 PM.

Come on by and bring a friend!
