Coffee and Coaching: From Networking to Connection

Wasn’t last week a fun time, discussing the last element in our networking series: What to do AFTER the networking event? As we discussed, in everything you do when networking, begin by understanding what and WHY you are doing things. I personally subscribe to the idea that networking is not about getting business, but about creating meaningful connections with others. This happens by getting to know them and offering them genuine acts of service. These can be introductions that enhance their network, articles and/or information that would be valuable for their business, or anything else you want to do to enhance your relationship with others. Will your expected business potential with that person play some role in your decision? Perhaps, but where I suggest you head with your relations is turning them into walking ambassadors for you with their circles of influence.

Of course, you will probably do even more for those who are actual clients and/or active referral sources. That is great. We should always treat people well who are helping us. But always be ready to help people, regardless of what they are likely do be able to do for you. They may become your biggest, most influential referral source. Wouldn’t that be valuable?

Even more fun was helping people with the challenges offered for coaching. It was great helping one member discover she knew what to say to people when meeting them at a networking event. We also had a great time helping another member gain perspective on her role in the marketing/business development side of her business — something new to her.

The Coming Week

This Friday (4/27) will see us kick off our next themed block, focusing on the power of connection. The May schedule for Coffee and Coaching will be out shortly, and it will be chock full of connection-oriented subjects.

A note about The week after next

Yes, the May calendar is coming out, but I wanted you to know that we will NOT be meeting the first Friday in May (May 4, 2012). That is the day of the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Would you like to join 125,000 leaders around the country for a great day of information, inspiration, and leadership? Then you’ll want to check out the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Here in Fredericksburg, the event will be hosted at Fairview at River Place. The conference fee is $85 and includes lunch and snacks. It will be a great time! You can order tickets here. If you know people outside Fredericksburg who would like to join in the adventure, you can refer them to the main Chick-fil-A Leadercast web site.

Coffee and Coaching: A final thought on Networking!

We had a great time last week talking about networking and making others feel comfortable. The big secret? Just as with making yourself feel comfortable, be prepared and focus on others.

This week we’ll talk about what to do after a networking meeting to continue to create connection. (Yes, we did talk a little bit about that, but we’ll have more ideas about leveraging your newfound connections.)

So join us on Friday at Panera Bread in Cosner’s Corner, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. All meetings are Fridays from 3 to 5 PM. For more information, call me: (703) 622-5282.

Oh, and we enjoy some coffee (or your favorite warm or soft beverage).

Last week in review

Last week was lots of fun. We talked about how to stop feeling awkward when networking. The secret? A couple of things:

  • Know why you are going to the networking event. Knowing why you are there will help you accomplish your goals.
  • Plan your time there. Whether you are going to meet someone in particular, or just to meet somebody new, plan questions you can ask so that you don’t have to think about them while you are talking. You can then listen!
  • Go with the idea that you are going to meet people and make friends. If you do that, you’ll have plenty of time to do business. So relax and enjoy the time!

The coming week

We are devoting the month of April to effective networking concepts. So, in that spirit, our topic this Friday is: Helping Others Feel Good While Networking.

As usual, we will be at the Panera Bread in Cosner’s Corner, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. Friday afternoon, 3-5 PM.

Coffee and Coaching Off to Strong Start

How would you like to get a bunch of business experts to help you with a challenge you are facing? That’s what is happening in our Coffee and Coaching program.

The group doubled between the two weeks, from 5 to 10. We have had a great time talking about how to set goals and about how to achieve them, too. The coaching sessions have seen people start talking with a coach, but sessions evolving into Masterminds, where the group is focused on offering advice and insights to help each other grow. It is truly inspiring to watch. People really are living the TIPS philosophy – Together Inspiring Personal Achievement!

Introducing Coffee and Coaching!

COFFEE and COACHING

Coffee and Coaching is a great new open forum / open networking group. Each Friday afternoon from 3PM until 5PM I will provide a program that includes a short teaching on topics to help people move their professional and/or personal lives forward. Then we will have a discussion about the topic. Following the discussion, we will have at least 30 minutes of “laser coaching” and end with some networking.

Format

The two cornerstones of Coffee and Coaching are the weekly program/discussion and the laser coaching.

Program topics will be wide ranging and varied, focusing on actionable information for professional or personal development. for the next few weeks will include:

  • March 23: Secrets to Effective Goal Setting
  • March 30: You’ve Set Goals, Now What?
  • April 6: How to Stop Feeling Awkward when Networking

After the program topic is presented, we will have a general discussion and Q&A on the topic. My goal is to get you thinking and figuring out how to apply principles to help you work. Discussion and questions help people get ideas they wouldn’t have had otherwise just listening to somebody talk (no matter how entertaining…).

Following the discussion, I will do some “laser coaching” for interested individuals. Laser coaching is sort of a speed coaching session. Any individual with a challenge they are facing can sign up and participate. The participant will give a one to two minute summary of the challenge they are facing. I will then ask them some questions. Depending upon the size and complexity of the challenge, we will develop a gameplan for the participant to use. It might be an overarching strategy. It might be a key next step. But you can be sure that the participant will feel empowered to make that next step if they choose. I cannot guarantee success, because that is a decision the participant must make. But if they are willing to partner, then we can do great things together!

There will be a sign-up sheet for laser coaching at each session. (You can also sign up by emailing me your topic). There is no limit to the number of laser coaching sessions you can get, but you can only get one at each session. We also want to be fair to everybody, so if the line is long, you might be asked to wait if others have not had a previous opportunity.

Who should participate?

Coffee and Coaching is open to anybody interested in personal or professional development It will be of especial interest to business owners, executives, and up-and-coming employees.

Location! Location! Location!

We feel very blessed and honored to have the cooperation of the Panera Bread in Cosner’s Corner (Massaponax area):
10059 Jefferson Davis Highway
Fredericksburg, VA

Seating is first come/first served, so we might not be in exactly the same place week to week, but we will try.

Any cost?

The great news about Coffee and Coaching is that there is no cost to participate! We do ask that you support Panera and consider purchasing a beverage or pastry when you arrive. We will also ask you to sign in so that we know you were with us.
