Wasn’t last week a fun time, discussing the last element in our networking series: What to do AFTER the networking event? As we discussed, in everything you do when networking, begin by understanding what and WHY you are doing things. I personally subscribe to the idea that networking is not about getting business, but about creating meaningful connections with others. This happens by getting to know them and offering them genuine acts of service. These can be introductions that enhance their network, articles and/or information that would be valuable for their business, or anything else you want to do to enhance your relationship with others. Will your expected business potential with that person play some role in your decision? Perhaps, but where I suggest you head with your relations is turning them into walking ambassadors for you with their circles of influence.
Of course, you will probably do even more for those who are actual clients and/or active referral sources. That is great. We should always treat people well who are helping us. But always be ready to help people, regardless of what they are likely do be able to do for you. They may become your biggest, most influential referral source. Wouldn’t that be valuable?
Even more fun was helping people with the challenges offered for coaching. It was great helping one member discover she knew what to say to people when meeting them at a networking event. We also had a great time helping another member gain perspective on her role in the marketing/business development side of her business — something new to her.
The Coming Week
This Friday (4/27) will see us kick off our next themed block, focusing on the power of connection. The May schedule for Coffee and Coaching will be out shortly, and it will be chock full of connection-oriented subjects.
A note about The week after next
Yes, the May calendar is coming out, but I wanted you to know that we will NOT be meeting the first Friday in May (May 4, 2012). That is the day of the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Would you like to join 125,000 leaders around the country for a great day of information, inspiration, and leadership? Then you’ll want to check out the Chick-fil-A Leadercast. Here in Fredericksburg, the event will be hosted at Fairview at River Place. The conference fee is $85 and includes lunch and snacks. It will be a great time! You can order tickets here. If you know people outside Fredericksburg who would like to join in the adventure, you can refer them to the main Chick-fil-A Leadercast web site.
So join us on Friday at Panera Bread in Cosner’s Corner, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. All meetings are Fridays from 3 to 5 PM. For more information, call me: (703) 622-5282.
Oh, and bring a friend!
