How would you like to be a REAL Success?

There are several components you need to master in order to be a REAL success in life. At Coffee and Coaching this November, we will discuss the secret contained in REAL — Relationships, Equipping, Attitude, and Leadership — in order to help you along your success journey. Using material from John C. Maxwell’s book How To Be A REAL Success, we will examine these areas and help you put together your plan for becoming a REAL success.

Calendar

11/2 – Introduction / Relationships
11/9 – Equipping
11/16 – Attitude
11/23 – Happy Thanksgiving (No Coffee and Coaching)
11/30 – Leadership / Wrap-up

Format

Coffee and Coaching is an informal affair. Each week, we present a business or personal development topic to help people move forward their businesses. After the talk and Q & A session, a coach does some “laser coaching” where people have the opportunity to share a current challenge they are facing and discover a logical next step to get them moving forward in the right direction. After the coach gets things moving, the group is invited to “Mastermind” with the volunteer to discover additional novel ways to approach the issue. As the meeting begins to wrap up, people will have an opportunity to connect and network.

Coffee and Coaching is brought to you by TIPS: Together Inspiring Personal Success. Meetings are Friday afternoons from 3 PM to 5 PM at the Cosner’s Corner Panera Bread, 10059 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. There is no charge for Coffee and Coaching. Come out and bring a friend!

Attitude is Everything

I have to tell you, the more I think about it, the more I know that Attitude is everything. The key is to nurture your attitude so that it is healthy and helps you envision and create the positive outcomes you need in order to achieve REAL Success. Regular interaction with positive people is one route to maintaining a healthy attitude. So is being in a posture of continual growth. The real secret, though, to a great attitude is ACTION. Taking action and then studying the results so that you can do even better in the next cycle — celebrating what went right and creating tools to address the challenges will give you confidence as you continue the cycle of doing and learning.

But always remember that attitude is a choice. We cannot always choose our circumstances, but we can choose our attitude toward them. When I was in high school, I applied to go to the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA). I had a vision of myself providing great service to our nation in time of extreme need, and I was going to be prepared. My enthusiasm led me to seek out and spend regular time with the West Coast Regional Director of Admissions for USNA, Tom Teshera, and develop a great relationship. I got almost all of the way through the process to be accepted to USNA, but unfortunately, I narrowly missed the cut off for admission. I didn’t see this as a defeat, since you could apply so long as you hadn’t turned 22, so I figured out a way to improve my record so that I could gain admission the next year.

There was an easy way for highly motivated candidates to get to USNA, and numerous hard ways. In my pride and ignorance, I chose one of the latter. However, my enthusiastic attitude unwillingness to quit helped me attract the people I needed to make straight my crooked path. And in the final moment of challenge, when it looked as though I would fail yet again, Tom stood up for me, citing my indomitable attitude as proof that I would be able to succeed at USNA. Tom’s faith in me also gave me strong motivation to keep up my attitude whenever I was frustrated at USNA, showing how Relationships and Attitude are so vital to being a REAL Success.

Leadership

The foundational principle in John Maxwell’s philosophy of Leadership is that Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. What are you doing to increase your leadership ability? You work by/for yourself, you say, so why do you need to worry about leadership? It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you want to accomplish, it will require you partnering with other people. Even if you are not “in charge” of others, leadership is all about our ability to influence other’s actions. So come out and learn a little bit about how to increase your leadership ability this week at Coffee and Coaching!

Equipping for the journey, plus a hint about Attitude

Wow, another incredible Coffee and Coaching session in the can. If you were able to make it, I hope that you got as excited about Equipping as I did. There are lots of reasons people don’t equip their team, but I suppose that the number one reason is that they don’t understand a fundamental principle of success: One is too small a number to achieve greatness. Are you of the opinion that you would rather just do it all yourself because you just like doing it or that others aren’t capable? Maybe the real problem is in your dream/vision for your success.

I used to be that kind of guy. Early in my career in information technology, I didn’t really have confidence in my team to get things done as well as I could, so I invested my time into getting it done myself unless I absolutely couldn’t do it myself. Sure, that solved the immediate problem, but it meant that when the next job came around, I was in the same spot all over again. I was hustling my butt off while my team was standing around wondering what was going on.

When I finally realized that I could organize myself and teach others, giving them training and mentoring along the way, backed with deadlines that were early and often enough so that I could make course corrections before they could adversely impact the schedule, I started my rise in my industry, I actually started to become a REAL success!

So remember to ask yourself these questions as you are working on your goal:

  • What is my Dream? — What could be?
  • Who is on my Team? — What is?
  • What is my Dream Team? — What must be?

To find your DREAM, equip your TEAM so that as your DREAM TEAM you can work together to achieve amazing things!

Attitude

John Maxwell loves to say, “Leadership less to do with position than disposition.”

Have you been part of a team that seemed to be an unstoppable juggernaut on its way to success, regardless of the challenges at hand? Have you ever been on a team that, regardless of its skills and talents, seemed cowed by the challenges it faced? I suspect that the attitudes of the leaders were very different… and that it eventually was reflected in the team at large.

Even if you are a “Team of One” right now, your attitude affects how you approach your activities, and eventually your success. Come and see what you can do to build a better attitude and get onto the path of success this week?

Reviewing Relationships…and thinking about Equipping

So, last Friday at Coffee and Coaching we got started looking at being a REAL success. John Maxwell teaches that success depends upon being able to develop and master four dimensions: Relationships, Equipping, Attitude, and Leadership. Naturally, we took first things first and talked about the 10 rules of relationships. The one that I find most interesting is the “101% Rule.” Now, I’m normally the kind of guy who feels that if we are getting real about things then I usually reject the ol’ 110% type things — giving a little bit extra… but the 101% Rule is a little different.

When we are seeking to have a relationship with people, we should focus on that 1% that we can both agree on and give that 100% of our effort rather than do what we often do, focus on the 1% we disagree on and give THAT 100% of our effort. When I was first married, my wife Ellen would cook dinner for me every night. At the end of each meal, she would ask, “How did you like it?” Knowing that as a newlywed she was eager to please me, I took her question to mean two things: Did you like it? How can it be better? My usual answer was, “Dinner was great. But xxx would make it even better next time.”

After a couple of months of this, one evening she about told me I could cook for myself! I was way to focused on the 1% we didn’t agree on and giving it 100% of my attention, instead of doing just the opposite. I definitely had some making up to do.

Truth is all of us get very sensitive when we are seeking to build relationship and people instead focus on our faults. On the other hand, we really build trust and confidence in people who are totally committed to the things we have in common. Why not be intentional this week about the 101% Rule and build trust with your team this week?

Equipping for Success

This week at Coffee and Coaching we will be talking about Equipping for Success. Big, lasting achievements always require a team to get them done. What are you doing to assemble and equip your team so that they can help you reach that vision of your goal? Are you holding back at all? Why not come learn about

Coffee and Coaching for July 2012: Purpose and Persistence

Have you ever thought about what you really want? Do you wonder whether you really have the drive to see it through? Then this month’s series at Coffee and Coaching is just for you!

In May and June, we discussed communication and personal relationships, most recently considering such subjects and bringing people around to your way of thinking, and the number one secret of great communication. Today (6/29) we are going to examine the subject of giving praise and criticism people appreciate – a tricky subject, but one which can really empower your relationships, grow your organization, and increase your revenues.

Essential to achieving any life or business goal is having a clear picture of your purpose and having the perseverance to see things through. Our biggest challenge in life is creating a clear picture of what we want, and then holding that image until we bring it to be. During July, we will examine four topics that will help you gain focus and clarity on these important subjects, and give you some concrete things you can do to grow these skills.

The Practices of Connection

Last week we explored the five principles my good friend John Maxwell wrote about in his book, Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. These principles are foundational to our ability to create deep, rich, and lasting connections with the people that are important to you. In case you missed them, they are:

  • Connecting Increases Your Influence in Every Situation
  • Connecting Is All About Others
  • Connecting Goes Beyond Words
  • Connecting Always Requires Energy
  • Connecting is More Skill Than Talent

So, how do you put these into action? That would be The 5 Connection Practices. Come find out what they are at this week’s Coffee and Coaching.

If you enjoy the series and would like to dig deeper into “ECFC” why not sign up for the Mastermind group that will tackle this book in July? The ten week program begins on July 23. You will learn about the 5 connecting principles and the 5 connecting practices. Learn how to enrich the connections in your life and turn them into valuable relationships that pay dividends to your business, advocacy, or other personal endeavor.

That’s Coffee AND Coaching

Don’t foget, we also coach people who are facing personal or business challenges. In 5 minutes, I can help you see what your next step needs to be with whatever situation you have. And once we have made that first step, we Mastermind with the group. I am continuously amazed at the genius and generousity of our Coffee and Coaching devotees. It is inspiring and lots of fun! So come with a question or a challenge where you could use a little help and see the true wisdom of the team!
